Smyth takes 2nd at YMCA National Gymnastics Championships
When 13-year-old gymnast Meredith Smyth sets a goal for herself, she means business.
Competing for the Warren Powerhouse gymnastics team out of the Warren YMCA, the Sugar Grove resident entered the YMCA National Gymnastics Championship & Invitational late last month as the Pennsylvania Level 4, 13-and-older champion.
Competing at the Duke Center in Cincinnati June 23-25, Smyth placed second all-around in Level 4, which was quite an improvement over her 23rd-place effort in 2022.
Competing in a field of 42, the daughter of Steve and Sherry Smyth finished second on the beam and third in the vault in the 12.5-15.3 age group. She also placed seventh in the bars and took eighth place in the floor competition, which was good enough for second all-around.
Smyth is not only an accomplished gymnast, but the eighth-grader at Eisenhower Middle High School is also a straight-A student and serves as the secretary for the National Junior Honor Society. In her free time, Smyth competes in basketball and softball.
