Riggs Memorial Champions is Sunday
The 33rd Jim Riggs Memorial Champions is scheduled for Sunday on the Lake Course at Chautauqua Golf Club.
Among the confirmed players are defending champion Josh Harrington; past champions P.J. Gronquist, Greg Winter, Jack McCauley, Scott Crist, Nolan Swanson, Nolan Ditcher and Taylor Beaver; and 2022 club champs Jerry Rouse of South Hills Country Club, Nate Sandberg of Blueberry Hill GC, Matt Fuller of Elkdale CC, Tyler Nelson of Moon Brook CC, Frank Lewczyk of Breezewood Links, Austin Stoddard of Conewango Valley CC, Jesse McMichael of Jackson Valley GC, Ryan Lehman of Pinehurst GC; and Nick Giambrone of Cable Hollow Golf Course.
Last year, also at Chautauqua GC, Harrington made an 8-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to claim the title, outlasting Crist, a two-time Riggs Memorial Champions winner, and Swanson, who has claimed it once.
For Harrington, the championship bowl he received after the 2022 title was his third, matching the ones he captured after winning in 2013 and 2014. The list of golfers who have had at least three crowns is decidedly small.
The only other names on that list, in fact, are Dick Cole (1996, 1997, 2002 and 2003) and Shelly Grant (1992, 1993 and 2001).
The tournament was established in 1990 by late Post-Journal sports editor Jim Riggs, who wanted to recognize club champions from the regulation 18- and nine-hole courses in the circulation areas of The Post-Journal, the OBSERVER and the Times Observer.
