Dragons baseball wins season finale

OIL CITY — “A really fun one to end on,” Warren coach Andrew Morrison said of the Dragons’ 9-4 win on Friday in their season finale at Oil City.

Warren (6-13) overcame a 2-0 deficit with a four-run third inning and never trailed again.

“I’m very happy for the seniors, winning their last two games,” said Morrison. “They are a great group of kids and, to see them finish up like that, that’s why you do this.

“I could talk all day about the seniors we had this year,” he added. “We had 10 of them, and not all of them played a ton with the talent we have in the junior class. That can be really tough, but they all stuck with it and were great teammates. That’s a skill they’ll be able to use the rest of their lives.”

One of those 10 seniors — Archie Teconchuk — earned the win on the mound on Friday.

“Archie threw a great game,” said Morrison. “He kept them off-balance and trusted his defense. I’m really happy for him because he really lives and breathes this game. He deserved that.”

Teconchuk allowed four hits and two earned runs over 4 2/3 innings.

“The top of the order was phenomenal tonight,” said Morrison. “Ben (Sowa) did what he does and is just constantly on base. Konnor (Hoffman) is just a great player. He can be really scary next year. Gio (Elinsky) and Owen (Blum) both ended the year on a tear. Anthony (Errett) kept giving us great at-bats despite being no where near 100 percent at the end of the year.”

In an 11-hit attack on Friday, Sowa and Blum had three hits each and Hoffman and Elinsky two apiece. Hoffman, a junior shortstop, had a double, home run and four RBIs in the win. Elinsky knocked in two runs.

“I know if you look at our record it’s not super pretty, but I know myself and the other coaches see the improvement,” said Morrison. “We were much more competitive this year, despite our region. Future-wise, there are a lot of talented kids coming back next year. Konnor, Brady (Berdine), Eric (Dippold), and Aidan (Zdarko) will all be third-year varsity players next year. There’s some really good underclassmen coming up, too. If they put the work in, I think they can be a really solid team next year.”
