Warren loses to McDowell in baseball
McDowell scored seven fifth-inning runs en route to a shortened 14-1 Region 5 baseball win over Warren on Wednesday.
Warren (1-5 in the region) was outhit 5-4 by the Trojans but four Dragons pitchers combined to walk 11 McDowell batters and hit two more. Six of those 11 walks came in the seven-run fifth in which three Dragons pitchers were used.
Warren starting pitcher Brady Berdine allowed three hits and five walks over 3ª innings, striking out 10; only three of his seven runs allowed were earned runs in the 99-pitch outing. Warren trailed just 3-1 after three innings.
After Berdine hit a batter and walked another to start the fourth, the Dragons committed their only fielding error in McDowell’s four-run fourth that eventually chased Berdine and broke the game open.
McDowell (3-0) wouldn’t strike out again after Berdine departed, but the Trojans reached on a hit, six walks and a hit batter in the seven-run fifth.
Warren’s Eric Dippold had two of the team’s four hits in the loss.
