The Sheffield boys were able to defeat Oswayo Valley (113-28) and Port Allegany (91-50) Tuesday afternoon on Wolverine Mountain, in their first track meet of the season.
Oswayo Valley beat the girls team 80-55, while Port Allegany won a close one 72-64.
“Last year we had a close one-point victory over Port, so to win in convincing fashion over them tonight was a good feeling,” said Sheffield head coach Jason Snell.
Kassidy Orinko and Emma Roell were the Lady Wolverines’ only overall victors. Orinko won the high jump clearing 4 feet, 7 inches, and Roell took discus with a throw of 77-5. The girls also won the 400-meter relay with a time of 57.6.
“There’s more growth for the girls,” said Snell. “Some of them it was the first meet and some of them were either timid or shy. It’s a very young team.”

The Sheffield boys were dominant, led by senior Lucas McNeal winning three events. McNeal took the long jump (18-6), triple jump (37-1), and high jump (5-8). McNeal was also on the winning 400-meter relay team (47.71).
“He’s been our lead jumper since he was a freshman,” Snell said of McNeal. “He’s battling a tight groin issue right now, so he didn’t get the distance that he wanted, but he’s happy with three first places, as are all of us. Obviously, he’s not happy with it. He wants to heal up and I think Easter break will help that.”
Collin Brown, Leihden Wotorson and Damar Seymour also participated in the 400-meter relay. Wotorson won the 100 meters with a time of 12.08, followed closely by Seymour and Brown. Seymour added another win, taking the 200 meters (24.55). Dylan Hardwick won the 800 meters with a time of 2:15.
“We are in a great position,” said Snell of the boys team’s fast start. “Port Allegany, we won a tight one by one-point last year, so to win by 41 points is pretty good indication of where we’re at.”
Sheffield will take on what was originally their season-opening opponent, Johnsonburg, in a make-up meet next Tuesday on Wolverine Mountain.
