Finch: Big 30, YMCA/YDL all-star games were ‘great opportunity’

Sheffield's Connor Finch spent the final week before his first track meet of the year, participating in a pair of basketball All-Star games. The 6-foot, 4-inch senior was selected to play in the Big 30 and YMCA/YDL Sports Network games.
"It was a great opportunity to play with the same group of kids I've been playing against for years," said Finch. "It gave me new insight being on their team this year."
The Big 30 basketball game is made up of two teams, one from Pennsylvania, one from New York, with 10 players selected per team. Finch is only the third Sheffield player chosen for the prestigious game. Previous Wolverine participants were the Higby brothers, Adam (2015) and Drew (2017). Finch dropped 10 points in the 105-96 loss to New York.
"I felt our team had great chemistry and we played well together," said Finch. "The most challenging part was getting up to speed. It was a fast-paced game and that wasn't our style of ball. Add in the break of the off-season, I can confidently say it was the most challenging part, the speed of the game."
Finch would go on to play in the YMCA/YDL (Your Daily Local) All-Star game the following weekend where he would score 11 points.
This game is made up of two teams selected by team captains, who are chosen by the organizers, from District 9 and District 10, who then go on to draft participating school's top senior players to fill out the roster. Finch, a member of Team Hartle, defeated Team Cook 123-117.
"Knowing that I have worked very hard these past few years, it was very reassuring to be selected," said Finch. "Having a good work ethic was always important to me, and it was good watching it translate to the court."
