Corry powers past Warren at Legion Field

Jon Albers’ blast over the left-center field fence started a five-run top of the seventh inning in Corry’s 9-5 Region 5 win at Warren on Friday at Legion Field.

Trailing 9-1 in their final at bats, the Dragons managed four runs, but the damage was done.

“We woke up a little bit too late today,” said Warren coach Andrew Morrison, whose Dragons fall to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the region. “Our at-bats were, truthfully, pretty bad until about the fifth inning. That’s not going to cut it in this region. Albers is a good pitcher, but we are better than we hit today.”

In addition to Albers’ home run, double and two RBIs, he allowed just one run over 5.1 innings on the mound, striking out nine.

“Ben (Sowa) and Konnor (Hoffman) continue to do a great job at the top of the lineup,” said Morrison, whose first and second hitters combined for four hits — including three doubles, two runs, and four RBIs. “We need to produce more in the middle of the lineup. We struck out several times in big spots tonight. The key to offense in high school baseball is putting the ball in play and we didn’t do that when we needed to today.”

Gio Elinsky added two hits and two runs for Warren from the ninth spot in the order.

“Carson (Farr) and Konnor both battled on the mound,” said Morrison. “I don’t have a bad thing to say about how they threw; Corry just hit the ball tonight and they deserve credit for that.”

Farr allowed three earned runs over 3.2 innings pitched, allowing four hits and four walks while striking out four. Hoffman gave up five runs on five hits in three innings of relief.

Corry is 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the region. Cathedral Prep leads the region at 2-0 (7-0 overall).

“Back at it at Prep (11 a.m. at Mercyhurst University) Saturday,” said Morrison. “They are the number one team in the state. We know what to expect from them. That’s the nature of our region and we will show up ready to compete.”
