It seems appropriate that Warren’s swim team honored two seniors that have epitomized the program, and then that program swept Meadville on Monday at the Warren YMCA.

Warren head coach Russ Beyer said both Kirsten Johnson and Jarod Peterson have been perfect examples of leaders to a young team and also to what dedication and hard work can lead to in their own lives.

“The Johnson family, both Paige (at Gannon) and now Kirsten (to attend Edinboro) are college swimmers,” said Beyer. “Jarod is going into the Army and is interested in the special forces.”

The swim team’s gain, Peterson played football and was then involved in mixed martial arts until he agreed swimming would keep him in shape and better healthy. Just starting swimming as a freshman, Peterson has qualified for districts in four events his senior season.

Johnson qualified for states last year in the 100-meter backstroke. On Monday, she finished first in the 100-meter backstroke in the Lady Dragons’ 105-67 win. Beyer hopes their depth will also come into play against Cathedral Prep in a week.

Lucy Harrison won the 200-meter individual medley, just ahead of second-place Johnson; Laney Gatto, Izabelle Heacox and Ellie Yeager swept the diving points; Summer Lucks won the 100-meter butterfly uncontested; and the team of Lucks, Katie Krogler, Sam Caudill and Harrison won the 400-meter freestyle relay.

Jen Giger, who has dropped nearly 25 seconds this season, qualified for districts in the 400-meter freestyle in 5:22.03.

On the boys’ side, Warren edged Meadville 70-64 after the Bulldogs edged the Dragons earlier this season.

Hugh Harrison broke his own 100-meter butterfly record by winning in 57.37 seconds. He also won the 100-meter breaststroke Monday.

Jacob Retterer won the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke; Drake Niemitz 200-meter individual medley and 400-meter freestyle; and the senior Peterson finished first in the 100-meter freestyle.

Warren’s 200-meter freestyle and 400-meter freestyle relays of Retterer, Harrison, Peterson, and Niemitz — which Beyer said both teams have an outside shot at states — each finished first versus Meadville.

Starting at $3.50/week.
