Sheffield wrestling tops Eagles

Sheffield was able to bounce back after a rough loss to Cranberry on Tuesday, to dominate cross-county rival Youngsville, 42-11, on Thursday evening.

The Wolverines racked up six pins, three of which — by A.J. Barnes (121), Trenton Mead (189), and Matt Lobdell (215) — were under a minute. However, for Sheffield, the real momentum-grabbing match took place early on, just after Barnes’ pin of James Johnson with freshman Hayden Holden getting some revenge against an opponent who pinned him just 12 days earlier at the Mercer VFW Tournament in the consolation semifinals.

Holden found himself down early (4-2) in the 127-pound matchup with Youngsville senior Ian Mancuso. Holden gained a little ground back in the second period, outscoring Mancuso 2-1, pulling within one. Mancuso went up two more early in the third, yet with under 30 seconds to go, Holden was able to score five on a reversal and near fall, giving the young Wolverine a 9-7 win.

“Hayden got demolished and pinned by that kid at the Mercer tournament, and he came back, and we worked on some stuff and he turned that on and wrestled well tonight,” said Coach Holden. “He kept wrestling, that’s the big thing. He’s cleaning it up and he’s starting to wrestle a lot better.”

Holden and Mancuso weren’t the only rematch from the Mercer VFW Tournament, as Logan McDonald and Chase Kyler also went head to head in the championship semifinals, where McDonald earned a quick pin. However Kyler was able to go the distance in last night’s match, inevitably falling 20-4. Although McDonald dominated majority of the match, the Wolverines’ first-year coach was pleased with his grit and improvement

“Chase Kyler put a lot of effort in,” said Holden. “Logan’s a tough kid. He could have went out there and laid down, and he wrestled.”

The Wolverines final points on the night, came from Quincy Boose, who was able to earn a pin in the second period over Graeme Minnis at 285.

“He wanted that,” said Holden of Boose’s pin. “And he goes after it. He doesn’t quite know how to go after it some of the time, be he goes after it,”

The Wolverines will host Coudersport next Wednesday, while Youngsville’s next match will be another cross-county one, as it travels to Eisenhower on Tuesday.
