Sheffield wrestling tops Coudersport, finishes second in league standings
With Monday’s Allegheny Mountain League Championships looming, the Wolverines ended their regular season with a win over visiting Coudersport on Wednesday night, 30-22 to finish with a 4-1 AML record (6-9 overall), only behind 5-0 Port Allegany.
“I think we’ve got a good room,” said Sheffield head coach Tom Holden of his 2022-23 team. “We’ve got a group of kids, that if you come up here in the summer, you’re going to see them working. That carries over. You get that confidence in yourself.”
Hayden Holden (17-10), Collin Brown (24-6), and Chase Kyler (20-9) all earned pins to kick off the matchup over the Falcons. At 145 pounds, Coudersport Junior Owen Deutschlander (14-9) was able to snag a victory from Sheffield freshman Zach Barnes (11-16) for the Falcons first points of the night. Holden applauded his lighter weight grapplers for taking care of business, highlighting Hayden Holden for being ahead of the ball from where a freshman typically is, and Collin Brown and Chase Kyler for both wrestling well all season.
“The lighter weights did what they needed to do,” said Holden. “Everyone is coming along good.”
Wolverine sophomore Alex Marfink (9-12) took care of Coudersport’s Tyler Boyd in what would be Sheffield’s last contested victory of the night, with pin in the first period to go up 24-5.
Falcons’ John Wright at 175 would get a technical fall over Trenton Mead (18-11) and despite a strong start, Sheffield’s Quincy Boose (6-9) was pinned by Gavyn Ayers in the second period.
“Quincy is going out there and getting at it” said Holden. “It makes me wish we had him a few more years.”
Holden’s focus now will be on the AML Championships and then to Districts just 11 days later at Clarion University.
“We’re going to have to buckle down,” said Holden. “We have some guys who can get out of Districts. It could be anywhere from one to three to four guys depending on how things match up with seeding and how they wrestle. We have four guys here who are capable of getting out, that being said, there’s other teams with the same weights that are right there with them. If we put the work in and do the extra work between now and postseason, I think we’ll be fine.”
