Sheffield suffers loss to Cranberry

Times Observer Photo by Cody Elms Sheffield’s Trenton Mead takes control Tuesday night resulting in the Wolverines’ first points and only pin against Cranberry.

It was a rough night for the Sheffield wrestling team as it suffered a 54-12 setback to Cranberry on Tuesday.

“They have six state-ranked wrestlers,” said Sheffield head coach Tom Holden, making no excuses for his Wolverines squad as the season winds down. “We knew we weren’t winning this match, but we could have won three more matches. They’re the better team, but we wanted to get on the mat and wrestle.”

Arguably two of the Berries’ top wrestlers, freshmen Dalton Wenner (22-7) and Alex McLaughlin (22-4) both went uncontested, starting Cranberry out with a 12-0 lead. Despite a good effort by A.J. Barnes in the first match of the night at 121, Cranberry’s Elijah Brosius was able to improve his season record to 21-6, with a 13-5 decision over the Wolverine senior. Brandon Murray at 126 faced off against Hayden Holden then Conner Reszkowski at 133 took on Collin Brown, both controlling much of their matches to put Cranberry (3-1) up 24-0.

“A.J. Barnes wrestled a high-caliber wrestler,” said Holden. “He made a couple silly mistakes, but he was in that one.”

The Berries went on to pin three of their next four opponents before Sheffield’s Trenton Mead at 172 was able to earn the Wolverines’ their first points of the night, pinning Cranberry’s Jaden Smalley in the second period.

“He wrestled a good match,” Holden said of Mead. “They bumped a kid up to wrestle him.”

The Wolverines will take on cross-county rival Youngsville at home Thursday night.

“They got a few good wrestlers,” said Holden of Thursday’s match up with the Eagles. “We’re not going to dodge. We’re going to go head-to-head with their good wrestlers.”
