Kophazy, Connolly are still dominating girls wrestling

Warren Area High School freshman Jenna Kophazy recently won her sixth straight Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling (PJW) Area 8 girls title at Maplewood High School, and Sheffield seventh-grader Kaelon Connolly was awarded her fourth championship.

“Kaelon (135 bracket) had a match for the championship, but her opponent bumped up a weight class right before the close of registration,” said Keith Kophazy of Warren County United Girls Wrestling Club. “She was really looking forward to earning this one on the mat, where she has lost just once to a girl on the season.

“Jenna, with many dominating first-period pins in the previous championships, this final year of the PJWs was no different,” said Keith Kophazy. “She pinned Karmyn Blystone of Union City in 1:59 (in the 125 championship).

“With only one person in her bracket this year, she showed up and weighed in and headed out the door to go to Seagertown to wrestle in the District 9/10 girls’ high school championships, where she placed second, and hurried back to the PJWs around noon to face off in her championship match there,” said Keith Kophazy.

“Both ladies are off to Johnstown this weekend to take their shots at a PJW state title,” he said.

Also at last weekend’s District 9/10 girls’ championships at Saegertown High School, 11th-graders Katie Seamens and Kasey Kophazy of Warren County United Girls Wrestling Club finished second and third respectively to advance to West Region competition this weekend at Kiski Area High School, Leechburg.

Starting at $3.50/week.
