Warren swimmers split at Meadville

MEADVILLE — The Warren girls swim team’s solid depth came into play on Thursday in a 107-75 win at Meadville.

“The boys’ meet was crazy,” said Warren coach Russ Beyer of a narrow 67-63 defeat of the five-man Dragons. “A lot of close races. In three events, our boys were out-touched by a total of a second. That’s a 10-point swing.”

Hugh Harrison won the 50-yard free in 22.06 seconds, just off school-record time, and the 100-yard backstroke in 52.62. Harrison teamed up with Drake Niemitz, Jarod Peterson, and Jacob Retterer to win the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard free relay. Brody Alexander won the 500-yard free, Peterson the 100-yard butterfly and Niemitz the 200-yard free.

“Drake Niemetz dropped 4 seconds in the 200 free,” said Beyer. “Brody, Hugh, Jarod and Jake swam near-best times.”

For the Lady Dragons, divers Laney Gatto, Izzy Heacox, Bailey Williams, and Ellie Yeager all set personal-best scores with 234.5 points, 212.4, 194.3, and 127.1, respectively. Gatto led the girls with a 9/10 on her inward dive.

“The girls performed solidly,” said Beyer. “Sam Caudill dropped three seconds in (winning) the 500. Lexi Paris dropped two seconds in the 100 fly.”

Other first-place finishers for Warren’s girls included Kirsten Johnson in the 100-yard backstroke, and the 200-yard free relay of Leyna Irwin, Lucy Harrison, Katie Krogler and Summer Lucks.

Starting at $3.50/week.
