Harrison breaks 2 more records for Warren swim

Photo submitted to Times Observer Slowly but surely, Warren junior swimmer Hugh Harrison is locking his name in for the majority of school records on the big board at the Warren YMCA, including two more on Thursday at Mercyhurst Prep previously held by Derek Hahn and Bennett Steber.

ERIE — Hugh Harrison broke two more school records on Thursday, and the Warren swim teams swept host Mercyhurst Prep.

Harrison won the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.81 seconds, breaking the 2014 school mark by just .06 seconds. He also broke the yard record in winning the 100 butterfly in 51.15 seconds for the Dragons, who beat Mercyhurst Prep 56-39 in the process.

The Lady Dragons had an even easier time of it, winning 128-33.

What’s more impressive for Harrison, he broke those records swimming alone, without anyone racing against him.

“The breaststroke was from 2014 (Bennett Steber) — I broke that one by a fingernail,” said Harrison. “The butterfly was my freshman year, but my teammate Derek Hahn snatched it from me last year.

“It’s not very hard to hype myself up during meets like this, whether I have competition or not,” Harrison added. “I’m mainly focused on self-improvement and swimming as fast as I possibly can. But competition helps. I hate losing.”

For the Dragon boys, freshman Drake Niemitz won the 200 individual medley and 500 free, freshman Jacob Retterer the 50 free and 100 backstroke, and Jarod Peterson the 100 free and 200 free. Niemitz, Peterson, Retterer and Harrison also won the 400 free relay.

For the Lady Dragons, Samantha Caudill won the 500 free, Kirsten Johnson the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley by just over a second over teammate Summer Lucks, freshman Leyna Irwin the 50 free and 100 breaststroke, and freshman Lucy Harrison the 200 free and 100 butterfly. Izabelle Heacox finished first in diving. Harrison, Lucks, Eliza Brook and Johnson teamed to win the 400 free relay. Johnson, Caudill, Lucks and Harrison won the 200 medley relay.
