Not one, but two starters scored season highs in points on Saturday in the Warren girls basketball team’s 68-33 Region 5 win over Meadville at Warren Area High School.

Senior Gracie Ruhlman was 11 for 11 at the free-throw line and finished with 19 points. Junior teammate Halle Kuzminski finished 6 for 7 at the line with 18 points for Warren (10-6, 4-0).

“We are focused on cleaning up the little things at this point,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan. “One day at a time and keep improving is all we are looking for. After a slow offensive start on Thursday, it was nice to see us get after it today on offense.”

Gracie Ruhlman and freshman Peyton Wotorson scored 7 points each in Warren’s 21-8 first quarter. Ruhlman had 17 points by halftime.

“I’ve been doing this for 15 years; that is what seniors do,” LaVan said. “When you need them, they always step up. She knows her games are limited being a senior, so she just goes out and gives everything she has.”

For the game, the Dragons finished 21 of 25 at the free-throw line and outscored Meadville (5-10, 1-3) in every quarter.

Gracie Ruhlman added seven rebounds and little sister, junior point guard Sammie Ruhlman, dished out seven assists. Kuzminski finished with a double-double, adding 10 rebounds, and Wotorson had five steals.

“Our two freshmen, Peyton and Meea (Irwin), are really starting to put things together,” said LaVan. “They don’t play like freshmen anymore.”

Warren travels to Conneaut (3-1 in Region 5) on Monday for “a big test for us,” said LaVan.
