Each time Youngsville made a run, Cochranton would connect on a deep ball and slowly pull away during a 61-34 Cardinals’ victory over the Eagles Friday at Youngsville High School.

The first quarter played out in back-and-forth fashion and it appeared as if the game would be close throughout. Nathan Lucks hit two of the Eagles’ first three buckets as the Eagles led early, 6-5. Lucks would soon pick up his second foul, however, and need to spend some time on the bench.

Still, Youngsville stayed close and a putback from Alex Hill in the final seconds of the quarter got the hosts within two, 14-12, after eight minutes.

In the second quarter, the Cardinals began using the 3-point shot to put some distance between themselves and Youngsville. Using aggressive dribbling and kicking the ball out to the corners, Cochranton got three first-half 3-pointers from Walker Carroll and one each from Dominic Matt and Dawson Carroll as the Cardinals’ lead was pushed to 33-22 at halftime.

The deep-ball onslaught continued into the third quarter as the Cardinals connected on their eighth trey of the game with 3:10 still left in the third quarter. All told, Cochranton held a 30-0 advantage from behind the three-point line.

Lucks finished a strong game with 12 points and Koby Hendrickson added 7. Blake Myers, Keegan Mesel, Hill, Ethan Senz and Wyatt Dalrymple also found the scoring column in defeat.

The Eagles’ junior varsity team fought to the end in a 39-35 overtime loss to the Cardinals. Talon Mesel had 17 points to lead all scorers.

Youngsville returns to the court Tuesday when it visits Eisenhower for a county rivalry showdown.
