Warren suffers OT setback to Gators
ALLEGANY, N.Y.– Warren’s boys basketball team lost at the buzzer on Thursday, then fell to Allegany-Limestone in overtime, 70-61, on Friday at the Joe DeCerbo Holiday Basketball Showcase at Allegany-Limestone High School.
“I was pleased with our overall effort up until the end of regulation,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine, whose Dragons are 5-3 overall after back-to-back losses.
Warren led 45-40 after three quarters. After the Gators battled back to tie, 55-55, the Dragons had a chance to win on their last possession with the shot clock turned off to end regulation.
In overtime, Carson Kwiatkowski hit two key 3-pointers and Allegany-Limestone was 9-of-12 at the free throw line when Warren was forced to foul.
“I think these last two games of the tournament have shown us that there are some areas we definitely need to improve,” said Berdine. “I don’t think we were good on our help-side defense tonight and I don’t think we rebounded very well.”
Warren led 16-8 after the opening quarter with Parks Ordiway scoring 5 points, Brady Berdine and Tommy Nyquist 4 each, and Konnor Hoffman connecting on a 3-pointer.
Allegany-Limestone clawed back to within two points at halftime. Gabe Ramadhan, Anthony DeCapua and Kwiatkowski each hit 3-pointers in a 17-11 second quarter for the Gators.
Owen Becker had 6 points and Nyquist and Ordiway connected on treys in the third quarter for Warren, now up by five. But Allegany-Limestone continued to reach the free throw line, finishing 13-of-18 in the fourth quarter and overtime. The Gators were 19-of-30 at the line for the game.
“When you’re playing good teams, you have to limit your mental mistakes and execute from player one to five,” said coach Berdine. “I think these are areas we will work on moving forward.”
Michael Frederick had 12 of his 18 points in the second half, including 6-for-7 at the line in the third, fourth and OT. Ramadhan was 3-for-4 shooting free throws in overtime and finished with 15 points for the Gators (4-0), and Kwiatkowski scored 8 points in the extra four minutes and finished with 14 in the game. Decapua chipped in 11 points in the win.
