Lady Dragons come back to win at JCC Showcase
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — Brick by brick. Layer by layer.
These are the kind of sound bites head coach Lisa LaVan has been using to describe this season’s Warren girls basketball team.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Lady Dragons (5-4) won their third straight — this time in resilient fashion, 57-42 over Panama on the second day of the JCC Showcase at Jamestown Community College.
“That was a good Panama team we beat today,” said LaVan. “We got down early and they pushed their lead to 12 in the first. Slow start for us, but this group is tough! They are starting to get it. It was a very physical game and the girls worked hard for this win.”
Six-foot senior center Josephine Bailey scored all nine of her points in a 19-9 Panama first quarter. By halftime, Warren had cut its deficit to five points, holding Panama (5-4) to six second-quarter points.
Warren junior point guard Sammie Ruhlman took over in the third quarter, scoring nine of her 11 points, and the Dragons took a two-point lead.
The fourth quarter was all Warren, both offensively and defensively. Junior Halle Kuzminski was 3-for-3 at the line in the fourth and led the Dragons with a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds for the game. Eleven of those points came in Warren’s dominant 37-17 second half. Alana Stuart scored nine of her 12 points in the second half.
Much like the win over Ellicottville on the first day of the JCC Showcase, eight Dragons scored points.
“Emily Davidson and Meea Irwin did a great job on their best player, (senior point guard) Mandy Brink, after Sammie got into foul trouble early,” said LaVan. “Halle played a great all-around game. Halle and Sammie had two great days! Meea, too!”
Brink finished with 17 points for Panama — 10 in the first half.
Earlier on Wednesday, Peyton Wotorson and Emma Roell combined for 22 points in Warren’s 35-20 junior varsity win.
