Grove City edges Warren in tennis

Warren’s girls tennis team fell to visiting Grove City, 3-2, on Saturday at Betts Park.

“Grove city is currently tied with Hickory for first place in Region 1, and we knew this was going to be a challenge,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino. “This was a very even match all around, which led to the most competitive match we have had this season.”

At first singles, Iris Kiehl lost to D-10 singles runner-up Macy Matson, 0-6, 0-6 and at second singles, Warren’s Grace Carr lost to Cana Severson, 3-6, 3-6.

“This was a great match to watch with most games going to deuce,” said Pellegrino. “Cana was just able to take advantage of the big points today and that was the difference-maker.”

Warren freshman Lucy Harrison topped Ella West, 6-1, 6-3, at third singles.

“Lucy keeps getting better every match,” said Pellegrino. “She didn’t give her opponent anything today and tracked down ball after ball and ultimately just wore her opponent down.”

At top doubles, Izzy Heacox and Kaelin Hatfield lost to Grove City’s Jane Coulter and Emily Williams, 6-4, 4-6, 2-6.

“This was a great doubles match, but Grove City really picked it up in sets 2 and 3 and took over,” said Pellegrino.

Madalynn Perry and Sydnie Cochran defeated Ava Duglonski and Joella Bandi, 6-3, 6-0.

“Our girls started a little timid and got down 2-3 in the first set, but after that change-over, they calmed down and just went on a roll — capturing the next 10 games in a row,” said Pellegrino.

“We beat (Grove City) last year, 3-2, on their senior night, and I think they remembered that and came for revenge…,” added Pellegrino. “This is definitely a tough pill to swallow and our girls are hoping to get another shot at Grove City if we can make it into the D10 playoffs.”

Warren next hosts Bradford at 4 p.m. today at Betts Park.
