Lady Dragons tennis edged by visiting St. Marys

Warren’s girls tennis team had its chances but fell, 3-2, to St. Marys on Saturday at Betts Park.

“This one definitely stings a little bit,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino. “They beat us 3-2 last year by sweeping all the singles as well. We had our chances and opportunities in each match, but we played nervous and timid in the big moments. We need to learn and build from this match and get ready for Erie High next Thursday at Betts.”

At top singles, Iris Kiehl lost, 2-6, 4-6, to Mya Klaiher.

Warren’s Lucy Harrison took the first set at second singles, 6-2, before falling 3-6, 1-6 to Caitlin Blessel for the match.

At third singles, Kaelin Hatfield was edged 6-7 (3-7) by Roan Lion in the first set before losing 3-6 in the second set.

“Both doubles teams were dominant today, giving up only three total games,” said Pellegrino.

Warren’s Grace Carr and Izzy Heacox won, 6-1, 6-1, over June Chen and Maddy Wittman.

At second doubles, Winnie Wolf and Madalynn Perry swept St. Marys’ Rylee Nicklas and Tralynn Ginther, 6-0, 6-1.

“Our doubles are our crutch in tight matches like this, but unfortunately we couldn’t pull out one of the singles matches today to close out the win,” said Pellegrino.

Starting at $3.50/week.
