Frewsburg’s Grey sent to Triple A
Connor Grey’s stay in the Big Apple came to an end Saturday when the New York Mets optioned him back to their Triple A affiliate in Syracuse.
The Frewsburg native was called up to the big leagues on Monday and was warming up in the bullpen Tuesday and again Friday, but he never appeared in a game.
Grey returns to Syracuse where he has compiled a 5-5 record and a 5.52 earned run average in 93 innings pitched. He has struck out 75 and walked 40 in 22 appearances, including 21 starts. In his last appearance on Aug. 17, Grey earned a no-decision against Charlotte.
Meanwhile, another area native was called up to the New York Yankees’ Triple A affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.
Matt Minnick of Collins earned the promotion after compiling a 4-2 record and a 2.03 ERA for Somerset of the Eastern League. In 53.1 innings pitched spanning 29 games, he has struck out 56 and walked 19.
Selected in the 23rd round of the 2019 draft, the Collins native is a graduate of St. Joseph’s School in Gowanda, St. Francis High School in Athol Springs and pitched for Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Last season, Minnick, a left-hander, appeared in 30 games for the Hudson Valley Renegades in High-A East ball, formerly the New York-Penn League. Minnick picked up five wins and two losses in relief in 2021 and recorded three holds while posting a 4.40 ERA.
