Newark officially eliminates Skunks
Pilots win 10-0 in 7
NEWARK, N.Y. — The Jamestown Tarp Skunks’ playoff hopes were hanging on by a threat after a 6-1 loss to first-place Batavia on Wednesday.
After a 10-0 seven-inning West Division loss to the Newark Pilots on Thursday, the Tarp Skunks were officially eliminated from the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League postseason picture.
Last-place Newark scored eight runs in the first four innings, including four in the first, off Jamestown starting pitcher Ian Korn. Korn struck out three and walked one while allowing eight hits.
Richard King threw the final two innings for the Tarp Skunks, allowing a pair of runs on two hits and three walks while striking out one.
Mark Tucker, Brandon Lane and Jordan King each singled for Jamestown.
The Tarp Skunks never advanced a runner past first base in the first six innings.
In the seventh, Pat Bigham was hit by a pitch and Lane singled with one out. After another out, King walked to load the bases, but a flyout to left field ended the game via the mercy rule.
Justin Santos threw all seven innings, striking out five and walking four for Newark. Aaron Whitley had three hits and three runs scored, Greg Kopp had three hits and drove in four runs, and Fernando Espinal had three hits and scored two runs. Gage Boatman also drove in four runs for the Pilots.
Jamestown will end its season with a 7 p.m. game tonight at Dunn Field in Elmira against the Pioneers, who are fighting for the last playoff spot in the West Division.
