Corry tops Warren in region matchup

Corry pitcher Nathan Lesher held Warren in check while the Beavers chipped away, defeating the Dragons 8-1 on Monday in a Region 5 baseball game at Old Legion Field.
The senior threw exactly 100 pitches over seven five-hit innings, striking out nine without a walk.
"Not our best today," said Warren coach Andrew Morrison, whose Dragons are 3-5 overall and 3-4 in the region. "Corry is a really good team, but we put ourselves into a bunch of bad situation with errors and a poor approach at the plate.
"Credit to Lesher," added Morrison. "He pitched a really good game; 70 strikes in 100 pitches will usually get the job done. We didn't attack fastball strikes early in counts like we usually do, which let him get out ahead of us."
A Warren error after Corry loaded the bases in the top of the fourth started the scoring in a four-run inning.
Hits by Owen Blum, Anthony Errett and Paul Smith led to an RBI fielder's choice by Brady Berdine to pull Warren to within 5-1. Errett finished with two of Warren's five hits in the loss.
A wild pitch and error led to two more Corry runs in the eventual 8-1 win.
The Beavers are 6-1 and in second place in Region 5.
AJ Slattery pitched two shutout innings with four strikeouts in Warren's 4-3 junior varsity loss.
