JCC baseball begins league schedule

ROCHESTER — In their first Western New York Athletic Conference matchup of the season, the Jamestown Community College Jayhawks fell to NJCAA Division II Monroe CC on Tuesday afternoon.

The Tribunes won Game 1 by a final of 10-0.

The Jayhawks (1-4) collected a pair of hits with first baseman Kenny Nickson III (Erie, Pennsylvania/Erie HS) and catcher Kameron Melendez (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown HS) getting on the stat sheet.

After falling behind by two runs in the first, Jamestown CC hit a one-out single to get the offense going. Melendez got on base with a two-out single but the runners were left stranded.

Pitcher Tanner Potter (Trumansburg, N.Y./Trumansburg HS) earned the loss on the bump, giving up seven hits, striking out three, and giving up eight runs. Alex Kemery (Youngsville, Pennsylvania/Youngsville HS) went the rest of the way, giving up one hit while striking out a pair of batters.

In Game 2, Monroe CC won 12-2.

First baseman Yordangel Gonzalez (Miami/Miami Jackson Senior HS) led the way with two hits on the day while four other batters also got in the hit column. Left fielder Wyatt Hennessy (Mukwonago, Wisconsin/Mukwonago HS) added an extra-base hit with a triple.

The Jayhawks got on the board early in the second game as Nickson got the offense going, scoring on an error to go up 1-0. The Tribunes answered in the bottom of the second, getting that run back.

After giving up six runs in the bottom of the third, Jamestown CC got one back in the top of the third. Right fielder Billy Harmon (Racine, Ohio/Southern Local) got the offense going with a double and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Gonzalez drove in Harmon with a single.

Pitcher Riley Piazza (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown HS) earned the loss on the mound, giving up seven hits and seven runs. Zach Rohlin (Russell, Pennsylvania/Eisenhower HS) went the rest of the way, giving up five runs on four hits while striking out three batters.

WESTMORELAND COUNTY CC TAKES TWO OF THREE

YOUNGWOOD, Pa. — In their season-opening doubleheader Thursday, Jamestown CC split against Westmoreland County CC, picking up the win in their first game.

Jamestown CC won the first game 7-0.

The bats started to work early and often for the Jayhawks (1-1) with Hennessy and third baseman Zach Zulawski (Melbounre, Florida/Viera HS) collecting three hits apiece. Harmon led the offensive output with three RBIs.

Hennessy got Jamestown CC’s first run of the year, sending a moon shot over the right-field fence in the third inning. In the fifth inning, the Jayhawks added a pair of runs with a sacrifice fly from Harmon and Hennessy using his wheels to bring in another run to go up 3-0. Jamestown CC capped off the game with four more runs in the seventh thanks to a pair of doubles by Hennessy and shortstop Nate Johnson (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern HS).

Right-hander Bryce Jackson (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown HS) picked up where he left off last season, fanning three hits and striking out 13 batters, a career-high. The 13 strikeouts puts his career total at 100 strikeouts in 12 games played.

In the backend of the doubleheader, the Wolfpack was able to get on the Jayhawks early, taking a 5-0 lead after the first inning. Westmoreland County CC added another run on the second to make it 6-0 en route to a 12-7 win.

Jamestown CC got on the board in the third inning thanks to a groundout by Hennessy but drove home center fielder Ayden Reagle (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove HS) to make it 6-1. Jamestown CC got three runs back in the fourth inning courtesy of a two-run single by Potter to make it a 6-4 game.

The Wolfpack extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth with four more runs scored to help put the game out of reach.

Pitcher Aaron Hair (Frewsburg, N.Y./Frewsburg HS) earned the loss on the mound, giving up five earned runs. Rohlin went 2 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and two earned runs. Kemery went the rest of the way on the mound, scattering six hits and a pair of runs.

After splitting the doubleheader, the Jayhawks dropped a 10-4 decision against host Westmoreland County CC on Friday.

Gonzalez led the offense for the Jayhawks with three hits while Nickson added a pair of RBIs.

Trailing 5-0 after the first three innings, Jamestown CC was able to get on the board as right fielder Mingjong Seong (Hanam-Si, South Korea/Baemyeong HS) drove in Gonzalez with an RBI groundout to make it 5-1. The Wolfpack answered with a run scored in the bottom of the fourth, making it 6-1.

Westmoreland County CC added four more runs in the seventh to push its lead to 10-1.

The Jayhawks added a pair of runs in the eighth thanks to a two-run single by Nickson to drive in Gonzalez and Hennessy to make it 10-3 with one more inning to go. In the ninth, outfielder Sal Carmona (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown HS) got on base with a double and later scored by a double from middle infielder Chris Navarro (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown HS), but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Pitcher Adonis Collado (Perth Amboy, N.Y./Perth Amboy HS) earned the loss on the mound, striking out six batters while giving up four hits and six runs over five innings of work. Walt Rybcynski (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis HS) took over the next two innings of work, giving up four runs on three hits. Piazza closed things out with one inning of action, striking out a pair of batters.

The Jayhawks will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Tompkins Cortland CC for their first Region 3 West Division games of the season.
