Warren’s Nyquist, Ordiway named region all-stars

Warren junior Parks Ordiway and sophomore Tommy Nyquist were named Region 5 boys basketball all-stars for the 2021-22 season.

Ordiway, repeating as a Second Team all-region all-star, averaged 13.7 points per game and made 62 3-pointers in 23 games for the 14-9 Dragons. He has a WAHS career record 129 made 3-pointers in two years as a varsity starter.

Warren reached the District 10 4A playoff quarterfinals after a 14-8 regular season and second-place tie at 11-3 in the region.

“Parks followed up a strong sophomore season with another solid offensive season,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “His shooting was tremendous again this year and I thought defensively he improved as well. I am not sure we have had a shooter like him in our program before. He makes teams pay if they want to sit in zones. Parks has really worked hard on his ability to get his shot off quickly.”

Nyquist — also named to the Region 5 second team — missed the first five games of the regular season after suffering a football injury, but paced the Dragons to two three-game winning streaks and a four-game streak to reach the playoffs. He averaged 9.6 points, 4.5 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals in 18 games.

“Tommy worked really hard getting himself in shape and up to speed after getting hurt at the end football this year,” said Berdine. “Having him back before region play was a huge boost for us. Tommy has led us in assists the last two years and this year he also excelled on the defensive end. We were able to match him up with the best players in our region no matter the position. Great to see him rewarded by the coaches in our region for his hard work. Best thing is we know Tommy will be back next year as a better player. He isn’t afraid to put the work in needed to get better. Second best thing is we have him for two more years and his offensive skill set is only going to get better.

“I am excited for both players in a rebuilt Region 5 next year,” added Berdine. “Two great kids who are also very hard workers; not surprised they get recognized by their peers for that.”
