ERIE -- A sweep at Prep-Villa on Monday night didn't stop the Dragons' record night in the pool.
Warren senior Katie Beyer broke the school record in winning the 100-yard backstroke in 58.18 seconds. Elin Smith had held the WAHS record at 59.83 since 2013.
For the Dragon boys, sophomore Hugh Harrison topped a 2014 record by Logan Gearhart. Harrison's 53.27 to win the 100-yard back bested Gearhart's previous 54.24.
Despite Prep's 125-52 win in the boys' meet and Villa Maria's 114-71 girls' win, Warren coach Russ Beyer said, "the schedule worked out great."
With the postseason approaching, Beyer said last week's meet at McDowell and Monday's at Prep-Villa were "a good time to go for it.
"We kind of prepared those kids that were close (to qualifying for districts) to get their last-minute slight taper," he said. "We've been working all year for these types of moments and they've been answering the call."
In addition to school records, Coach Beyer said Graham Carr qualified for districts in the 50 and 100 free and Brody Alexander in the 100 breaststroke. For the Lady Dragons, Sam Caudill qualified for the D10 meet in the 200 free, Eliza Brook in the 100 back, and Katie Krogler in the 500 free in only her third time swimming the event.
Warren's Katie Madigan also left Erie with a record -- the pool diving record at Hagerty Family Events Center.
Madigan took first place with a diving score of 280.7, breaking the Prep-Villa pool record by more than 30 points. Izzy Heacox took third place with a score of 168.45. Alexia Bowers had her best night on the board with a score of 133.55.
"We're ramping things up this week as we move closer to districts," said Warren diving coach Matt Madigan. "We have senior night Wednesday versus Meadville, Brookville on Thursday, and the McDowell Invitational Saturday. The girls are really working hard and getting better everyday. We're looking good, but still have a little meat left on the bone."
Warren first-place finishes at Villa included Beyer in the 200 free, and the 400 free relay team of Sophie Olson, Summer Lucks, Beyer, and Kirsten Johnson; and at Prep, Derek Hahn in the 100 butterfly, and Hugh Harrison in the 200 free.
