It didn’t take long for Warren senior Katie Madigan to find her sport.

It’s not that the former gymnast didn’t play dozens of sports; she also excels at volleyball and softball at Warren Area High School.

But only after a year of diving, she won a District 10 2A title, and finished fourth in the state.

Now committed to dive at Division II Clarion University in the fall, Madigan will go for the repeat today at McDowell Intermediate High School in Erie.

She also got a late start in her senior season due to injury, but she’s peaking at the right time. Madigan broke her own school record by surpassing a 300-point score for the first time ever in her last meet.

“More time is always nice, but Katie is ready to defend her D10 title,” said her coach and father, Matt Madigan. “Last Saturday, McDowell hosted a diving invitational — more or less a dress-rehearsal for districts. Katie beat 11 quality divers to win the invite with an 11-dive score of 491.15, which beats her district dive score from last year by more than 60 points.”

Katie has led an up-and-coming Warren program that also includes Izzy Heacox at districts on Saturday.

“We are very excited for tomorrow,” said Coach Madigan on Friday. “We’ve worked all season for this opportunity. Katie and Izzy had a great run-through tonight and are ready to go.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
