CORRY — Wrestlers all across western Pennsylvania and the southern tier of New York converged on the Corry High School gymnasium last weekend for the Tim Edwards Memorial Wrestling Tournament on Saturday and the Curt Bailey Memorial Novice Wrestling Tournament on Sunday.
Among the athletes competing were the Eisenhower youth wrestlers.
Participating in the Tim Edwards Memorial Tournament were Hunter Vanderhoof, Laine Jackson, Reid Mitchell, Lane Morrison and Ramsey Williams. Hunter, Lane and Reid all picked up two wins on the day. Hunter recorded a 2-0 decision and a 10-8 decision over Adam McCray of Corry, who had previously beaten him at the Area VIII Futures Tournament the weekend prior. Lane tallied a first-period pin and a 4-0 decision. Reid battled to get a 6-3 decision and also received a forfeit.
The redemption tour continued for Hunter on Sunday as he notched a commanding 7-2 decision over Emmett Snyder of Sheffield, who had previously beaten him at the Ridgway Winter Classic. Hunter finished the day with an undefeated 4-0 record. Also undefeated on the day, both with three wins, were Leyton Curtis and Alivia Glotz. Leyton used his double-leg takedowns to help grind out his three wins of the day.
Alivia’s smart wrestling and her snatch single were the difference in a close 4-2 win. She also recorded a 7-4 win, and a second-period pin.

Double-leg takedowns were the key to success for Drew Passinger and Ryan Hughes. Drew has shown vast improvement since the beginning of the season, with the help of his double-leg he recorded three wins on the day, two by pin. Ryan’s textbook double was the difference in a close 2-1 win. He also recorded a pin to end his day with a 2-1 record. Clayton Dyke continues to use his dominating half-nelson to record wins; he had a pin and a 4-3 decision to go 2-2 on the day.
Grayson Mitchell was aggressive on top and recorded a pin. Hazel Gilbert-Wennberg turned her opponent to his back multiple times before picking up her first pin. Kendall Hughes, wrestling in her first ever tournament, showed that she has been paying attention at practice. She built a commanding lead before pinning her opponent. Zain Woodburn used his half-nelson to get the mat slap for the pin. Hudson Vanderhoof bounced back after a close loss to pick up a decision. Gabe Walter, the king of never giving up, wrestled tough, fighting off multiple pinning combinations and refused to get pinned.
