Shooting star

Riley Childress needed 16 points to reach 1,000 for her career. For a while, it seemed like she may score a thousand in Warren’s opener on Friday night.

The senior point guard, who is committed to Roberts Wesleyan, scored 12 first-quarter points, and then swished two 3-pointers in the first minute of the second quarter, in the Dragons’ 74-9 win over Jamestown, Pa.

“It’s a big milestone in my career,” said Childress, who finished with 21 points, including four 3-pointers, at Warren Area High School.

Warren (1-0) advances to play Maplewood (1-0) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at WAHS for the home tourney title.

I was very nervous, but now that this has happened and I passed the milestone, all of my focus can be on the team,” said Childress. “Tomorrow should be so good.”

Childress sank a free throw to start the scoring and Warren never trailed. After Emma Ruhlman’s 3-pointer, Childress scored the next nine points for the Dragons in a 19-4 first quarter.

Childress’ 3-pointer with 7:01 left in the second quarter surpassed the milestone.

“They’re a smaller school and they’re trying to rebuild. They were good sports about it,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan. “Their coach came over and congratulated her.

“What I love is that, there were a couple in the stands tonight — Jaimie Eaton was here, Margo (Loutzenhiser) was here, Paige Wilson was here — that scored over 1,000 points (in their Dragon careers),” said LaVan. “It just tells you what kind of family we have. They watched all these kids grow up, and to have them here is pretty awesome.”

The most recent to have surpassed 1,000 is Riley’s senior teammate Emma Ruhlman, who accomplished the feat last season.

“I got yelled at on the bench, because Emma had three (fouls), and she was sitting next to me and she said, ‘I am going to be Riley’s assist on her 1,000th point!’ So I don’t even think I put her in the game. I think she checked herself into the game.”

Ruhlman was indeed Childress’ assist for the special moment.

While teammates, these two have helped the Dragons win two District 10 titles in three seasons, and on Friday, they were off and running.

Ruhlman added 19 points with five 3-pointers. Warren had 13 three’s on the night.

All three Ruhlman sisters (Gracie and Sammie, too) hit 3-pointers, as well as Alyssa Farr sinking two.

Fifteen Dragons saw playing time and Warren shut out Jamestown in the second half.

Halle Kuzminski and Gracie Ruhlman had 6 points each and played well on the glass. Kuzminski and Emma Ruhlman each had seven rebounds, and Childress added four steals.

“Halle’s going to have to rebound, Gracie’s going to have to rebound, and then they’re going to be relied upon when teams are going to try to shut down Emma and Riley,” said LaVan. “It’s nice having the young ones come in, and it was a good win.”
