Youngsville drops a set, but tops Eisenhower in end

Submitted Photo Youngsville’s Olivia Darling goes up for a kill Monday against Eisenhower in Youngsville.

YOUNGSVILLE — Youngsville defeated Eisenhower 3-1 to improve to 3-3 on Monday evening.

“Everyone is being flexible,” said Youngsville head coach Hannah Bulard. “Freshmen Kamden Swearingen and Madilynn Johnson stepped up big and Kenzie (Olewine) moved to libero.”

The first set was all the Eagles as they won 25-12.

In the second set, service errors cost Youngsville the set.

The third and fourth set were a claw point for point but in both the Eagles proved victorious 25-23 and 25-22 to finish out the match.

Olewine finished with 45 digs and four aces, and Mia Rafalski put down six kills and had 10 digs for the Eagles. Olivia Darling and Kamden Swearingen combined for eight kills and Dilyn Moore finished with 15 assists, six digs and four aces.

COVID-19 has had a big impact on both teams as this was Eisenhower’s first game out of quarantine and Youngsville is without both its jayvee and varsity liberos.

Sam Wilhelm is set to return soon as the Eagles try to get win No. 4 over Erie First Christian Academy.

Youngsville also won the jayvee game over the Knights in three sets going 25-20, 11-25, and 15-4 with a total of 13 aces in the win.

SHEFFIELD FALLS

ST. MARYS — Sheffield finally got all of its starters back after a two-week quarantine, but that wasn’t enough to pull off a win at Elk County Catholic on Monday as the Crusaders won 25-14, 25-11, 25-11.

“We were with them up until seven to eight in the first set, then we started playing to not make mistakes,” said Sheffield head coach Melissa Lemay. “Getting timid. We really struggled with serve tonight, which we are usually pretty steady at.”

The Wolverines field five sophomores on the varsity squad, and Lemay noted that this can be difficult for the mental aspect of the game, but is confident that the game experience will pay off down the line.

“Not having the girls together to practice and missing two weeks of competition is going to be something we need to get over,” said Lemay. “We have one practice (today), then three staright matches. Any issues that we need to work on are going to have to be worked on during matches due to lack of practice.”

Lynzie Grubbs and Emily Foster both had four kills. Kassidy Orinko added five kills and nine digs with two blocks. Kadence Steffan led in assists with 14 and had six digs.

The Wolverines will host Johnsonburg on Wednesday, then travel to Brockway Thursday, and close out the week with Kane at home Friday.

“We need to feel confident playing every team, and not go into any match thinking that we can’t compete,” Lemay stressed.

HUSKIES TOP WARREN

HARBORCREEK — After two straight Region 5 volleyball wins, Warren was swept on Monday in a non-region match at Harbor Creek.

Katie Madigan finished with eight kills and 13 digs in the loss; Halee Mineweaser had 14 assists, four kills and two aces; Summer Lucks 10 digs; and Kylie Fehlman two aces.

Warren’s jayvees fell 19-25, 25-18 and 11-15. Lauren Shattuck led Warren with five kills; Lily Hokel two kills; Gabby Pritzl four aces; and Lily Walker three kills.
