Warren loses to McDowell in tennis

Madalynn Perry and Sydnie Cochran overcame a tough start, but rallied to beat McDowell’s Rosa Simon and Lina Warrier 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Monday.

That was the one bright spot for Warren in a 4-1 loss to the Trojans.

Nabiah Bhatti beat the Dragons’ Sydney Govoni 6-0, 6-0 at first singles.

At second singles, Maria Minnichelli beat Mackenzie Lester 6-4, 6-3.

“Maria owns a very powerful first serve that dictated play for the majority of this match,” Warren head coach Tom Pellegrino said. “She held serve the entire match not giving up many free points to Mackenzie on her service games.”

McDowell’s Emma Heinlein beat Iris Kiehl 6-0, 6-0 at third singles.

At first doubles, Simon and Warrier beat Perry and Cochran 6-1 in the first set before Warren’s pair won the final two sets 6-3 and 6-4.

“We knew we had to switch up the game plan. The girls executed the new plan beautifully in the second and third set. Sydnie and Madalynn were not happy after that first set. They used it as fuel and came out firing in sets two and three and dictated play from that point forward,” Pellegrino said. “Perry was all over the net making it very difficult for McDowell to do anything from the baseline. Sydnie was placing her serves and returns perfectly today making it hard for McDowell to get on any offense. This was a great comeback win today.”

Perry and Cochran improved to 9-3 on the season.

At second doubles, McDowell’s Tia Jain and Abby Idzik beat Izzy Heacox and Sophie Olson 6-4, 4-6, 10-5.

“Since the team match was decided with McDowell being up 3-1, the girls played a 10-point tie-breaker for the deciding set. Our girls played a fantastic second set to get back in this match but fell just a little short in the tie-breaker,” Pellegrino said. “They got down early in the breaker putting a lot of pressure on us and giving McDowell all the momentum.”

Warren hosts Erie at 4 p.m. today at Betts Park. The last time the teams met, Erie won 3-2.

“All in all this was a great match for us. Last time we played McDowell we lost 5-0 and not a single match was close. Today our girls battled hard and made this match much closer than McDowell expected,” Pellegrino said. “This shows the massive improvement from our girls this season. We are going to learn from (Monday’s) matches and come to (today’s) match against Erie High with a positive mindset.”
