SHEFFIELD — In the first game of a five-game stretch, the Sheffield Wolverines were swept by Johnsonburg, 22-25, 16-25, and 16-25.
“They have to figure out passing,” said Sheffield head coach Melissa Lemay of what her girls need to do to make it through an increased number of weekly matches due to a two-week COVID quarantine in mid-September. “We don’t have a practice. We have five matches in a row with no practice. You have girls that haven’t played in 18 days, but the mechanics of passing the volleyball do not change. You do not forget how to do it.”
Kassidy Orinko had five kills, four blocks, and 15 digs. Syrena Antonuccio added seven digs; Lynzie Grubbs and Lexi Goldthwaite had four blocks apiece; and Kadence Steffan had 14 assists.
The Wolverines will go on to face Brockway on the road and then host Kane Friday directly after school lets out.
“Passing, passing, passing, passing,” said Lemay of what the Wolverines focus needs to be going forward. “We need to minimize our mistakes. We gave them ten points in attack errors and we missed ten serves. We gave up 40 points because of poor passing.”
The Sheffield junior varsity lost, 16-25, 25-23, 9-15. Emily Foster had five kills, 13 digs, and six blocks. Lily Benton had eight assists.
