UNION CITY — Keegan Eckstrom turned in a highlight-reel performance Friday night, rushing for 107 yards and two touchdowns, while returning the opening kickoff 87 yards for another score to lead Eisenhower to a 48-26 victory over Union City.

The win improves the Knights’ record to 2-0, while the Bears fall to 0-2.

“I think Keegan is probably the most explosive player nobody knows about,” Eisenhower coach Jim Penley said. “I don’t think we can hide him anymore.”

Hard to argue that when one considers Eckstrom, who scored on TD runs of 18 and 65 yards, averaged a shade more than 20 yards every time he took a handoff.

But he had help.

Knights linebacker Gannon Jaquay sacks Union City’s quarterback.

Benji Bauer added 104 yards on six carries, including an 87-yard scoring burst, and Shawn Pascuzzi added 54 yards and another TD.

The Knights led 20-6 at half and remained in control the rest of the way.

Penley was particularly pleased with the work of his offensive line that includes Connor Younger, Caleb Penley, Gannon Jaquay, Mike Vanatta, Drake Vanderhoof and tight end Mike Jones.

“They really opened up the holes for all of our backs tonight,” Coach Penley said. “It was just a great game by those guy up front.”

Knights quarterback Garrett Jensen completed 3 of 4 passes for 91 yards — all three to Wyatt Lookenhouse.

Defensively, Penley was equally impressed.

“I thought our defensive line did a great job against their triple option,” he said. “Caleb Penley and Michael Beaver played containment very well, shutting down the outside. … All in all, I thought we were very efficient on both sides of the ball tonight.”
