JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — Jamestown and Newark were tied, 1-1, after seven innings in Tuesday night’s Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League game at Diethrick Park.

No problem for the Tarp Skunks, though.

All they did was score 12 runs in the bottom of the eighth to win via the mercy rule, 13-1.

It’s been that kind of season so far for the hosts.

The win improved their record to 20-7 as the West Division leaders head into tonight’s scheduled home game against second-place Elmira with a six-game lead.

Until the eighth-inning outburst, the Tarp Skunks and Pilots found themselves in a pitcher’s duel that pitted Jamestown’s Evan Harrison, who came on in relief of injured starter Cade Swenson in the top of the second, against Newark’s McKinley Scott.

Both hurlers were tossing a gem — the Pilots led 1-0 on Max Gebauer’s single in the second inning and the Tarp Skunks tied it in the seventh on Luke Turner’s RBI double– until the floodgates opened in the bottom of the eighth.

Turner finished with a pair of doubles, Justin Bailey added two hits, and Johnny Kampes, Haiden Hunt and Chase Carlson drove in two runs apiece for the winners.

But the performance of the evening belonged to Harrison, who worked seven innings, gave up six hits, struck out three and didn’t issue a walk to improve to 4-2 on the season.

Scott pitched the first 6.1 innings for Newark and surrendered just three hits, struck out five and walked one. Kyle Blunt, one of five Pilots’ pitchers used in the eighth inning, took the loss.

Brennan Chisholm and Luke Mutz had two hits apiece for Newark.

Starting at $3.50/week.
