JCC HONOREES

Yuchnitz, Lundmark, Rissel Cited by WNYAC

Three individuals from Jamestown Community College — Karianne Yuchnitz, Macey Lundmark and Jim Rissel — have been recognized by the Western New York Athletic Conference for their athletic, academic and going above the call of duty this year.

Yuchnitz, a freshman from Panama, was named WNYAC Freshman Female Athlete of the Year and it should come to no surprise after a decorated season in the pool.

“She deserves every award from this past year with her excellence, in and out of the pool,” said director of athletics and recreation George Sisson. “This is a special award taken into account of all the great female student-athletes that competed this past year in the WNYAC.”

Yuchnitz had a prolific season for the Jayhawks, becoming the school’s first national champion, taking first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.87, a new school record. Yuchnitz also earned All-American status in six other events en route to helping the Jayhawks win the Non-Scholarship National Championship while also becoming the women’s Non-Scholarship Swimmer of the Meet.

Yuchnitz also broke two more school records at nationals in the 100-yard freestyle (52.25) and the 400-yard medley relay (4:36.68). Prior to nationals, Yuchnitz’s five First Team All-Region honors and one Second Team All-Region honor, helped her secure the Region 3 Women’s Swimmer of the Year and helped the team to the NJCAA Region 3 Swimming & Diving Championship. In addition, Yuchnitz was named Region 3 Player of the Week three times.

Lundmark, a sophomore from Jamestown, was named WNYAC Female Academic Athlete of the Year. To qualify for this award, the student-athlete had to have a minimum of three semesters will all grades computed, a minimum of 45 credit hours completed, and had participation in one sport for two seasons.

“This is an outstanding award for Macey,” Sisson said. “She had other opportunities to go elsewhere for academics, but decided to come back to play one more season of basketball amongst all the chaos with the pandemic.”

Lundmark met all qualifications, being a two-year member of the women’s basketball team, playing in 37 games. Lundmark graduated this spring with a degree in physical education studies where she had a 3.89 GPA.

Finally, Rissel, a Jamestown resident, was the recipient of the WNYAC Distinguished Person Award, which is presented to an individual who has had outstanding accomplishments or made significant contributions to a sport or athletics in general.

“Coach Rissel has been a tremendous asset as a coach and contributor with the athletic department here at JCC,” said Sisson. “Everyone is appreciative for his efforts and has had an impact on the student-athletes, other coaches and athletic administration. It is special that the WNYAC would honor him in such a way. He is truly a great and dear friend to the department.”

This season, Rissel was a volunteer assistant coach for the men’s golf team to add to his duties as the assistant coach of the men’s basketball program. Along with his coaching duties, Rissel also serves as a committee member for the George Bataitis Open, the fundraising program for athletic scholarships at Jamestown CC. Rissel also serves as the volunteer coordinator for the NJCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship held at Chautauqua Golf Club.
