Jayhawks swimmers earn academic award

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Academic honors keep rolling in as the NJCAA announced the 2020-21 Academic Teams of the Years.

Out of 820 teams that earned a 3.0 GPA or better, the Jamestown Community College men’s swimming & diving team took the honors in its sport with a GPA of 3.18.

“Super proud of these men,” said head coach Todd Conklin. “Not only did they compete in the pool but they got it done in the classroom. This was one of our goals at the beginning of the season for both teams was to be an All-Academic Team. This is a great honor and someting they should be proud of”

Joining Jamestown CC in representing Region 3 across at athletics include Erie Community College, Genesee Community College, Herkimer College and Mohawk Valley Community College.

This year’s swim team consisted of Matthew Fennell (Fourways Garden, Johannesburg, South Africa/King Edwards VII School), Elliot Johnson (Panama/Panama Central), Eathan Johnson (Panama/Panama Central), Maksat Mametjumayev (Sayat, Lebap, Turkmenistan/Ashgabat #19), Colby Pantall (Jamestown/Maple Grove HS), and Jackson Vanstrom (Jamestown/Southwestern Central).

Vanstrom and Mametjumayev add this honor to a decorated academic year as they were named to the Spring 2021 Dean’s List, NJCAA Region 3 Academic All-Region, and WNYAC 2020-21 Academic All-Conference team. Elliot Johnson also was represented on the Spring 2021 Dean’s List and WNYAC 2020-21 Academic All-Conference.

“Again, to do what we did last year during the pandemic was such a great accomplishment,” added Conklin. “As a coaching staff, we preach that grades are the most important and number one reason you are at JCC. Our institution should be proud that these young student-athletes were willing to go the extra mile and compete both in and out of the classroom.”
