Old Timers open season with sweep

The Jamestown Old Timers baseball team swept a pair of one-run games during a twi-night doubleheader against Niles at Diethrick Park last weekend.

Leadoff hitter and centerfielder Jon Sitler scored five of the Old Timers’ seven runs on the day while second baseman and pitcher Ron Thomas had five hits in the twinbill.

Niles turned a triple play in the first inning of the first game.

Sitler, Ed Baldensperger, Thomas and Wade Nelson reached to start the game, plating Sitler for the first time.

Dave Wortman came up with the bases loaded and no outs. Wortman hit a sinking liner that was caught just before it hit the ground by the Niles shortstop, who threw to second for the second out and on to first for the third.

Baldensperger, Rick Prindle and Larry Persing each had three hits on the day for the Old Timers.

In the first game, Baldensperger pitched six innings of four-hit ball. He held Niles scoreless through five innings before giving up four runs in the sixth.

Wortman led off the Old Timers’ half of the sixth with a single. He scored after singles by Prindle and Persing. Back-to-back singles by Mark Hovan and Doug Frank plated Prindle, tying the game at four.

Thomas came on in relief and pitched a scoreless seventh.

In the bottom of the inning, Sitler drew a leadoff walk. Baldensperger bunted him to second. Thomas then helped himself with a walk-off hit, earning the win.

Under the lights, Sitler started the second game like he ended the first — earning a walk and scoring on a single — this one by Nelson. In the sixth, he scored the only other Old Timers run after leading off with a single and coming around on hits by Baldensperger and Thomas.

Thomas pitched the second game, throwing a complete game and giving up a single run on two hits.

The Old Timers are off to a 2-0 start. Jamestown will visit Girard, Ohio, for a doubleheader this coming Sunday.
