Dragons dominate

Warren claims girls team title; Eisenhower tops boys

The Warren Girls dominated the track portion on Thursday at War Memorial Field during the Warren County Track Meet and that was enough to give the Dragons the win (76) over Sheffield (65), Youngsville (56) and Eisenhower (51).

Warren was victorious in seven of 12 running events with Sheffield and Youngsville dividing up the remaining five. Warren’s Shyann Rulander qualified for districts and won the 1,600-meter run by over a minute while teammates Alexia Bowers and Isabella Heacox went neck and neck on the 300-meter hurdles with Bowers squeaking out the win by 1 second. Star swimmer Katie Beyer brought her athletic prowess to the 3,200-meter run winning and qualifying for districts with a time of 12:45.

“I sat a lot of kids that, I mean they’re big points scorers, and they’ve already qualified for districts and I didn’t run them in those events because I wanted them to focus on a different event where they can qualify, and we got a lot of qualifiers out of that today, so I was very pumped about that,” said Dragons coach Kevin Dustin.

The second-place Wolverines were not without their highlights. Lexi Goldthwaite, who took first in triple jump later in the evening, won the 100-meter hurdles over Warren’s Teagan Paris by .03 second with a time of 19.10. The Wolverines then went on to win the 400-meter relay by the same margin over Eisenhower recording a 58.55 time. Emily Leichtenberger continued her incredible season taking first in both the shot put and javelin events. Emily Foster also snagged two first places in long jump and high jump.

Goldthwaite, along with Warren’s Bowers and Beyer would all share the Female Outstanding Track Athlete award, and Leichtenberger was the lone winner of the Female Outstanding Field Athlete award.

The Eagles’ Kenzie Olewine won and qualified for districts with a time of 1:05 in the 400-meter run. Teammate Julia Bojaczko would also qualify for districts coming in second overall in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 12:56.

“She qualified for the mile earlier in the year,” said Eagles coach John Victor. “Then things kind of hit the fan with the team and we battled through COVID for a couple weeks and it was right when she was doing really well, so she had to battle back.”

On the boys side, it was a close contest between Eisenhower (77), Warren (65) and Youngsville (63) with Sheffield (50) in fourth.

The Knights’ Alex Hummel posted two victories, one in the 400-meter run with a time of 52.26 and the other the 800-meter run where he trailed early but fought his way back clocking in at 2:14. Eisenhower took two relays, the 3,200 meters and 1,600 meters, as well. Hummel was selected as the Male Outstanding Track Athlete.

Youngsville’s Jake Hogg and Warren’s Alex Ferry put on the final act for the day in the high jump with all eyes on the two for very different reasons. Hogg was attempting to break the meet record of 6 feet, 7 inches while Ferry was going for districts.

“We’re still working steps for his high jump,” Victor aid of Hogg just barely missing the meet record, but he still won the event with a jump of 6 feet, 5 inches. “We knew every time he jumped, we knew what went right and what went wrong.”

As for Ferry, he just slipped over the bar at 5 feet, 9 inches to qualify and take second in the event. According to the Dragons coach, prior to the meet, Ferry had a personal best of 5 feet, 4 inches, but when asked if he could do it, Ferry was confident he could.

“Big jump for him today,” said Dustin. “He has made strides all year. That was a huge moment for him to qualify.”

Earlier in the meet, Hogg won the triple jump, discus and javelin to take the Male Outstanding Field Athlete honors.

The Wolverine’s lone boys victory came in the 400-meter relay with a time of 47.62.
