Alexander drives in Chapman as Eisenhower rallies
RUSSELL — Zane Alexander hit an RBI single through the left side of the infield to score Cole Chapman as Eisenhower rallied past Iroquois for a 7-6 Region 3 baseball win Monday at Werner Park.
The Knights fell behind after the Braves scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 6-5 lead. Eisenhower’s Camron Jakubczak scored the tying run on a passed ball before Alexander eventual picked up the game-winning hit.
Chapman was also the most effective pitcher for the Knights, coming on in relief for starter Teagan Gray and lasting into the seventh before allowing the tying run.
“He had a phenomenal game. We’ll probably look to see him some more,” Knights head coach Clint Corse said of Chapman. “He stepped up big time. It’s nice to see, as they get older, they develop some leadership skills. He said he wanted it so I gave it to him.”
Iroquois took a 2-0 lead right off the bat in the top of the first inning before Eisenhower answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame. Owen Trumbull and Jared Beers both singled and scored in the inning.
The Braves regained their two-run lead in the top of the third inning.
The Knights made it 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Alexander drove in Chapman.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Eisenhower tied the game as Gray scored on a Dillon Benson sacrifice fly.
The Knights took their first lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on Gray’s RBI grounder that scored Alexander.
Iroquois jumped back in front in the top of the seventh inning with a pair of runs before Eisenhower won the game in its final at-bat.
“It was a nail-biter,” Corse said, “that’s for sure.”
Collin May went 4 for 4 with three doubles and three RBIs for Iroquois.
The Knights (4-1, 4-1 Region 3) return to action Wednesday at Maplewood.
