Wilson drives in game-winning run; Warren’s pitchers shine

Warren’s baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk off Fort LeBoeuf 5-4 on Monday at Legion Field.

Ethan Wilson’s line-drive single to right with one out in the seventh drove home JT Blum with the winning run in the Region 5 game. Warren has won four out of five in the region.

Trailing 4-3, Ben Berdine started off the seventh with a line-drive single to left. JT Blum reached on a sacrifice bunt, and Owen Blum ripped a two-strike base hit to left, scoring Berdine to tie the game.

After Alex Borger moved up the Blum brothers on a bunt, Wilson hit a 2-2 pitch for the game-winner.

The strangest part, Warren trailed into the last inning despite its pitchers combining for a no-hitter.

Warren first baseman Owen Blum applies a tag to a Fort LeBoeuf runner.

“There’s three facets of the game, and we overcame two of them,” said Warren coach Rick Eaton. Dragon pitchers walked seven and the team committed four errors.

“We made uncharacteristic errors,” said Eaton. “Ben (Berdine) kept us in the game.”

Berdine started and threw 103 pitches over 5 2/3 innings, striking out 12 and walking four.

Trailing 2-0, Dylan Maeder led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and Gio Elinsky reached on a bloop single. Ben Sowa reached on an error on a sacrifice attempt to load the bases. Warren’s first run scored on none other than a Micah Passmore RBI walk (there were 12 total in the game). Berdine tied the game on an RBI groundout and Warren took a 3-2 lead on a ball to the backstop.

With Sowa on the hill in the seventh, he hit and walked a batter before a bunt moved the runners over. An RBI groundout tied the score and Fort LeBoeuf took a 4-3 lead when catcher Elinsky couldn’t find a pitch that got away.

The Dragons’ Ben Sowa waits for his pitch.

“Every region win is a good win,” said Eaton of the two-run seventh.

Berdine, Archie Teconchuk and Sowa combined on the no-hitter. Teconchuk for the final out in the top of the seventh for the win. Warren is 5-1 overall and 4-1 in Region 5. The Dragons are scheduled to host Cathedral Prep on Wednesday.

Nick Dooley took the loss in the bottom half for LeBoeuf (1-6 overall, 0-5 in region).

JT Blum had two of Warren’s eight hits.

Warren’s junior varsity followed the varsity win with 10 first-inning runs and a 12-1 win. Eric Dippold had two hits and two RBI for Warren. Carson Farr and Evan Swanson combined pitching to allow no earned runs.
