Cochranton holds off Eisenhower for 8-5 victory

COCHRANTON — Cochranton took control with a four-run bottom of the first inning and held off Eisenhower en route to an 8-5 Region 3 baseball win Monday.

The Cardinals pounded out 16 hits, led by a 4-for-4 day from Bryce McDonough.

Eisenhower (5-2) actually took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, pulled within 6-4 in the third and 6-5 in the fifth.

Cochranton pushed its lead back to three in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Knights couldn’t respond.

Zach Rohlin had two hits and two RBIs while Cael Hunt had two RBIs and Zane Alexander had two hits for the Knights.

Josh Merchbaker went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, Jack Rynd was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Wyatt Barzak was 2 for 4 with a double and three runs scored, and Jaiben Walker also doubled and drove in two runs.

Merchbaker also picked up the win on the mound, throwing six innings and striking out 11 while allowing six hits and five runs (four earned). Barzak picked up the save with a shutout inning of relief, striking out one and walking one.
