Berdine’s career night

Senior’s 34 points, six 3-pointers carry Warren to 16th win

After a loss at Franklin on Monday, Warren’s boys basketball team bounced back in a big way on Tuesday, scoring a season-high point total in an 80-61 win over visiting Corry.

The Dragons connected on 18 3-pointers and blew open a relatively close game in the third quarter.

Senior Ben Berdine had 34 points, including six 3-pointers, both career highs. He had 13 points in Warren’s 24-15 first quarter, and 14 points and four 3-pointers in a 23-10 third.

Berdine finished with a double-double with 10 rebounds.

Sophomore teammate Parks Ordiway also had six 3-pointers, including four in the 44-36 first half.

Freshman point guard Tommy Nyquist had three bombs himself, and finished with 11 points and 11 assists to pace the offense for Warren, which finishes the regular season at 16-5 overall and 10-4 and firmly entrenched in third place in 4A’s Region 5.

“The 3s were falling,” said Warren head coach Jeff Berdine, “and we got some stops in the second half after a back-and-forth first half.”

One of four seniors, including Berdine, Alex Borger and Ian Darling, Payton Barnes had eight points and 10 rebounds.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my seniors and this group in general, having to deal all year with the distractions of COVID, trying to stay away from being exposed, wearing their masks everywhere, doing all those things they were asked to do,” said coach Berdine. “And then come through it and get 16 victories during the regular season. I couldn’t ask for anything more. This was the year I thought we were supposed to rebuild; I guess sometimes, even as a coach, I get it wrong.”

The Dragons will await word on the District 10 playoffs, likely to begin Friday.

Nick Brundage had 22 points and Logan Joncas 20 — also with six 3s — for the Beavers. Corry (1-8 in Region 5) had knocked down 14 3s last Thursday in an 85-48 nonregion victory over Youngsville.

Justin Rich led Warren with 12 points in a 37-28 junior varsity win on Tuesday.
