Warren boys win fifth straight

When the Dragons defeated Titusville on Jan. 26, it was their fifth straight win.

On Friday, Warren won its fifth straight for the second time with a 76-23 win over visiting Titusville.

“We were aggressive early and played with energy,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine, whose Dragons are 11-4 overall and 7-4 in Region 5. Titusville is 0-9 and 0-7.

The Dragons led 41-9 by halftime and had 18 steals on the night.

“We hit on two of our three keys tonight, effort and focus,” said Berdine.

JT Blum led Warren with 10 field goals and 20 points. He and Ben Berdine had five rebounds apiece. Tommy Nyquist paced Warren with six assists.

Eleven players scored for Warren.

SHEFFIELD WINS BIG

SHEFFIELD — Tyler Hepinger and Tony Richards had 10 points each in a 31-11 first half for Sheffield en route to a 58-26 win over visiting Venango Catholic on Friday at Sheffield High School.

“We played patient and got the good open shots,” said Sheffield coach Jordan Copley, whose Wolverines are now 7-6 overall. “We moved the ball well as a team.”

Hepinger, who recently surpassed the 1,000 career points mark, led Sheffield with 19 points. Richards added 16 as 10 players scored for Sheffield.

Andrew Burda is VC’s own 1,000-point scorer, surpassing that mark with a 52-point single-game effort against Forest Area recently. He was held to 11 points Friday by the Wolverines.

Sheffield is at Union City today.

KESTERHOLT SPARKS EAGLES

YOUNGSVILLE — Sparked by 17 points from Ethan Kesterholt, and 14 apiece from Brady Olewine and Dominic Dell, the Youngsville boys knocked off Union City, 63-50, in a Region 2 basketball game Friday night.

The Eagles opened up a working lead courtesy of a 19-9 advantage in the second period and held a 34-21 lead at intermission. The game was played on even terms the rest of the way. The closest Union City got was 59-50 in the fourth quarter.

Matthew Bennett led the visitors with 19 points and Cole DeSimone added 13.

In the junior varsity game, Koby Hendrickson scored 17 points and Alex Hill added 10 as the Eagles prevailed, 48-38.
