Richards scores 23 to lead Sheffield boys

SHEFFIELD — The Sheffield Wolverines were able to hold off cross-county rival Youngsville on Monday night with a 52-42 home win.

“It was a whole team effort tonight,” said Sheffield head coach Jordan Copley after a game where the score remained tight until the final minutes.

Tony Richards led Sheffield (4-1) with 23 points followed by Tyler Hepinger with 15. The Wolverines were able to find some success around the perimeter with both Richards and Hepinger dropping in a 3-pointer each, as well as Connor Johnson. Sheffield also took advantage of their free throw attempts going 7 of 9 at the line.

“Our whole objective was to come in and slow the game down and make them play our game and try to control the clock, “ said Copley. “They’re a great team and they’re good in transition and the longer we can hold the ball the better off we were.”

The Eagles found themselves neck and neck with the Wolverines for most of the game as Joe Mack scored 15 and Dominic Dell followed up with 12. Brady Olewine and Timber Bower scored a combined 15 with Olewine hitting the Eagles’ only 3 of the night.

“They keep themselves driven, but they just couldn’t hit the free throws near the end and that definitely was a disadvantage for us,” said acting Eagles head coach Jason Peterson. “But I’m happy all the guys played well. The seniors do a good job leading.”
