Max Harrison, Katie Madigan set records for Warren swim team

For most of this season, Hugh Harrison and Katie Beyer have been setting records for the Warren Area High School swimming team.

On Monday evening, it was time for a pair of juniors to leave their mark.

Max Harrison set a new record in the 100-meter freestyle and Katie Madigan set a new six-dive record in 1-meter diving as the Dragons competed in virtual meet with McDowell.

“You could see it in her eyes and Max’s eyes when finally it happened,” Warren coach Russ Beyer said. “They were elated. Hats off to them.”

Madigan was the first to rewrite history. She finished with a total of 292.2 points after her six-dive breakdown of 39.1, 43.0, 51.75, 47.25, 55 and 56.1.

“Over the four or five meets, her consistency has really showed,” Beyer said. “She was really focused. All of the little details she’s been working on started to hit. With any sport, those little details make a big difference.”

Beyer was quick to credit Katie’s dad, Matt Madigan, and former diving coach, Adrienne Barmore, for Katie’s success.

“Matt is self-taught,” Beyer said. “Adrienne can be credited with a lot of Katie’s foundation. She’s really excited for her.”

“Sophomore year was her first year of diving,” Beyer added. “She was a gymnast before this and it’s a natural transition … with that body control.”

After the post-diving warmup, the 100-meter butterfly racers took to the pool.

Then it was Max Harrison’s turn in the 100-meter freestyle. He finished with a time of 55.15, more than 12 seconds faster than his closest teammate and nearly a half-second better than the previous record.

“Max has been chipping away, chipping away,” Beyer said. “He was one one-hundredth off the last time he swam it. He wasn’t leaving anything in doubt. He destroyed it tonight.”

It’s a record Max has been eyeing for nearly three years.

“When he came up as a freshman, he said he was going to get that record,” Beyer said. “Each year he’s been making progress. … His physique has changed. Now he’s swimming with a different body. He’s adjusted well and it’s really paying off now.”

Sophie Olson finished the evening as Warren’s fastest swimmer in the 200-meter freestyle (2:35.33) and 100-meter freestyle (1:10.22); Kirsten Johnson was fastest in the 200-meter individual medley (2:46.90) and 100-meter backstroke (1:15.71); Hugh Harrison had the top times in the 200-meter individual medley (2:20.54) and 100-meter butterfly (1:02.81); Max Harrison was fastest in the 50-meter freestyle (25.67) and 100-meter freestyle (55.15); and Connor Feldman had the top times in the 400-meter freestyle (5:13.81) and 100-meter breaststroke (1:21.53).
