High school sports back Monday

Teams can return to practice, games scheduled to begin next weekend

High school sports will be allowed to resume Monday in Pennsylvania.

Gov. Tom Wolf announced Wednesday that a number of statewide restrictions put in place three weeks ago to slow the spread of the coronavirus will be lifted at 8 a.m. Monday as originally planned.

Included in the restrictions was a ban on youth and high school sports. Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association teams will be allowed to resume practices Monday and most will need at least four additional practices before playing games, meaning the first action for those teams will be Friday, Jan. 8.

With those dates in mind, District 10 released revised schedules Wednesday for its teams. The deadline for particular sports to play in-region games will be: basketball, March 2; swimming, Feb. 22; and wrestling, Feb. 10.

The first action scheduled locally will be Friday, Jan. 8 when three boys basketball teams will be in action. In Region 2, Eisenhower will travel to Union City and Youngsville will host Maplewood while Warren will host Harbor Creek in its Region 5 opener.

The Dragons are scheduled to play 14 games with their final one Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Corry. Eisenhower and Youngsville will each play 14 games as well and close the regular season on Feb. 23. The Knights will finish at home against Cambridge Springs and the Eagles will close on the road at Cochranton.

Girls basketball will get underway Saturday, Jan. 9 as Eisenhower will visit Saegertown and Youngsville will travel to Union City in Region 2. Warren will get its Region 6 girls schedule underway Monday, Jan. 11 when it hosts Corry.

The Dragons are scheduled to play 12 games with their schedule wrapping up Monday, Feb. 22 when they host General McLane. The Region 2 teams are scheduled to play 14 games with Eisenhower closing out its season at home against Maplewood on Monday, March 1 and Youngsville finishing its season Thursday Feb. 25 at home against Cambridge Springs.

Warren’s 10-meet Region 3 swimming and diving season will begin Monday, Jan. 11 at Cathedral Prep/Villa Maria and end Monday, Feb. 15 at home against McDowell.

A truncated wrestling season will begin Wednesday, Jan. 13 for all three local programs. Warren will open its Region 5 schedule at home against General McLane and close it out Wednesday, Feb. 3 at McDowell. Eisenhower will open its Region 3 schedule at home against Cambridge Springs and finish Feb. 3 at Cochranton. Also in Region 3, Youngsville will travel to Corry for its opener and close at Cambridge Springs on Feb. 3.
