State reports early stats in bear season

For the first time, Pennsylvania’s bear season has included Sunday hunting.

And, the Pennsylvania Game Commission is providing live updates on the hunting.

So far, the numbers are unofficial, but that first Sunday hunt brought in 169 bears statewide.

In the first six hours of the season Saturday morning, more than 470 bears were harvested in the state.

By the end of the day Saturday, 748 bears had been taken to check-stations.

Eleven more had been reported for Monday as of early Monday afternoon, bringing the total harvest during the firearm season so far to 928.

A total of 2,906 bears have been taken counting firearms season, and archery, muzzleloader, and special firearms seasons.

Of those, 64 were in Warren County.

The county is not in the top 10 in the state in either number of bear harvested nor largest bear.

Potter (163), Tioga (159), and Lycoming (153) counties have the highest harvest so far.

The largest bear taken so far was a 719-pounder from Clinton County.
