Oil City as advertised, blanks Warren

Big. Fast. Strong. Big.

Wait, I already said big.

Oil City used its size and speed all night to steamroll Warren, 61-0, on Friday, the Oilers’ 19th straight regular-season win.

Warren head coach Mark Morelli knew coming in how good Oil City is, having lost 53-0 last season.

“This is the best team we’re going to play all year,” said Morelli, whose Dragons are 1-2. “Big, strong, powerful. They took us to the woodshed. The kids are more technologically-savvy than I am, but I told them we need to hit the delete button after this one.”

Oil City scored quickly and often.

Senior running back Cam Russell, who ran for 178 first-half yards, finished off an 80-yard Oiler drive for his first of four scores in the half.

Three first-half touchdowns came on the Oilers’ first play of the drive, including a 49-yard pass from quarterback Holden Stahl to Brayden Crocker.

On Oil City’s next possession, Russell scored from 63 yards out on the first play.

Later, after Oil City blocked a punt, Sean Stack ran 22 yards for a score on the drive’s first play. The Oilers led 40-0 at halftime.

Oil City finished with 358 yards rushing, 218 coming from Russell on just 19 carries. Stahl finished with four completions for 126 yards.

The Oilers also shut out Warren and imposed their will on the Dragons at the line all game. Warren had negative yardage rushing until backup quarterback Landon Douvlos broke away for a 45-yard scamper late in the game.

Despite starting QB Micah Passmore running for his life, there were some positives, with Douvlos hitting Ben White with a 25-yard strike late. And Blake Arnold made a tackle for loss on fourth down, recovered a fumble, and blocked a PAT attempt.

Warren has to forget quickly, said Morelli, and focus on Meadville next Saturday.

“The key will be … how badly we want it and how much effort we give,” he said.
