Warren girls play well in tennis loss to Villa

Villa was a 4-1 winner over Warren in District 10 girls tennis on Thursday.

Ryleigh Valone paced the winners at first singles, defeating Warren’s Maddie Rodgers 6-1, 6-1. Sydney Govoni claimed a close 6-4, 7-5 win over Sara Barrett at third singles to give Warren its only win of the day, while at second doubles Maragaret McGrovern and Grace Reed of Villa were able to pick up a 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) win over Madalyn Perry and Jackie Peterson.

“Sydney stuck with our game plan all match and pulled out a tough two-setter,” Warren coach Tom Pellegrino said. “This was the first time Warren has grabbed a singles win over Villa in years. This is a great win for Govoni. We were unable to pull out a win here, but our girls are taking this as a victory. Villa is a powerhouse in District 10 girls tennis and our girls really stepped up to the challenge. We lost 1-4 and were just a few points away from making it 2-3. We couldn’t be more proud of our team’s performance today.”

BOYS SOCCER

Parks Ordiway fired home three goals in the first half of play to lift host Warren (3-0) to a 9-0 win over Conneaut (0-1) in Region 5 soccer action on Thursday.

Mark Lynds added two goals in the win and JT Blum had a solo tally with two assists. Ian Darling, Will Nebinski and Patrick Heffern each picked up their first varsity goals, with Darling adding two assists and Wesley Kiehl three assists in the win.

Alex Ferry made one save in net for Warren, which will travel to Oil City on Monday.

Coach Dennis Flatt credited his defensive back line of Jack Darling, Sean Duckett, Ethan Best and Ricky Madril for their third consecutive shutout of the season.

GIRLS SOCCER

Warren girls soccer was a 13-0 winner over Oil City to open its District 10 Region 6 season on Wednesday.

Kyliegh Wilson had four goals and three assists, Kyra Wotorson three goals and four assists, Georgie Bickling two goals and five assists, Eliza Brook two goals, while single tallies came from Paige Johnson Sydney Rex.

The Dragons will travel to Maplewood on Monday.

VOLLEYBALL

RUSSELL– Eisenhower fell to 0-2 on the season Thursday as visiting Cambridge Springs (2-0) picked up a 25-12, 25-18, 25-12 victory in District 10 Region 3 volleyball.

Paige Edwards had four kills, one dig and two points while Rayna Hultman added four kills, four digs, seven points, four aces and 13 assists for the hosts.

Eisenhower claimed the junior high matchup, 25-23, 25-19, behind 20 points from Logan Grove and 11 points from Faith Donnell.
