Veterans return to winner’s circle at Raceway 7

CONNEAUT, Ohio — On a hot and muggy summer day, 105 cars signed into the Raceway 7 pits for another night of racing.

At the end of the 21-event card, Rob Kristyak was the RUSH Modifieds winner, Jeremy Double claimed the Economods, Matt Latta prevailed in the RUSH Late Models, Dennis Lunger captured the E-Mods title and Mark Lawrence raced to the victory in the Mini Stocks race.

The first feature of the evening was the E-Mods, brought to green by Eric Reinwald and Dan McDonald. Reinwald led lap one followed by Troy Johnson, Brent Rhebergen, McDonald and Joel Watson. With two laps complete Bob Diver spun on turn four just the leaders crossed the line to complete the lap with sixth-starting Watson already up to second and ninth-starting Lunger third, Johnson fourth and Rhebergen fifth. Caution flew again at three laps for Brandon Grossman, Dan McEwen and Diver, who spun in turn two. Lunger grabbed the lead on lap four over Watson, Reinwald, Rhebergen and Mike Kinney. McEwen spun again at lap eight in turn four. After green reappeared Reinwald and Johnson got together in turn two with Johnson spinning. At halfway Lunger led Watson, Rhebergen, Kinney and Josh McDonald. At 11 laps Kinney challenged Rhebergen for third but Rhebergen hung on. A caution bunched the field at this point as Mark Titus spun in turn four. At lap 12 McDonald spun from fifth in turn one and defending champion Kinney pitted under the caution. With the top five now Lunger, Watson, Rhebergen, Jesse Gould and Reinwald, the field again took the green with Rhebergen mounting a strong, but unsuccessful challenge for the runner-up spot and Lunger increasing his lead to 1.8 seconds. However a lap later Watson was again narrowing the gap, showing only 1.091 second at lap 15. It wasn’t enough though as Lunger went on to the win, actually increasing his lead to 1.351 at the checkers. Watson settled for second over Rhebergen, Gould and McDonald.

The RUSH Modifieds took to the track with a sparse field of only 12 cars, led after one lap by Kristyak, Chas Wolbert, Kyle Martel, Kole Holden and Tony Tatgenhorst. The order remained the same for the first 15 laps with Ayden Cipriani getting into fifth at lap 16. Kristyak went on to his second win at Raceway 7 by 2.915 seconds over Wolbert, Martel, Holden and Cipriani. The race ran caution-free.

The RUSH Late Models started 18 cars for their 20-lap main event. Latta and opening-night winner Josh Ferry brought the field to green with Latta leading Ferry, Breyton Santee, John Lacki and former champion Kyle Zimmerman at the end of one lap. The battle for fourth was side by side with Zimmerman and Lacki racing on the back straight at lap three. Yellow ended the battle when Tyler Allison spun in turn four. At five laps Allison stopped in turn four. The next yellow was again for Allison, his third, sending him pitside. At lap seven John Lacki, with help, spun in turn three and headed to the pit. Alex Haight spun for the next caution at lap seven after green reappeared. At halfway it was Latta leading Santee, Ferry, two-time defending champion Darrell Bossard and former champion Zimmerman.

Twenty-seven cars started the Economod feature with Double taking the immediate lead over Billy Cunningham, Matt Alexander, Mike Harmon and Zack Lenart, who was the winner on opening night. Lenart was fourth at lap two when Todd Miller and Derek Connors spun in turn four for the race’s first caution. Connor did not stop so was not charged with the caution. At the end of the back straight at lap three, heading into turn three, it was a three-way battle for second among Alexander, Lenart and Billy Cunningham with Mitchell Wright now fifth. At five laps, Bill Cunningham was fifth. Double was pulling away from the field opening a 3.296 second lead at lap seven when Connors again spun, this time in turns one and two with Hayden Loomis spinning to the outside wall. On the green Bob Vogt spun in turn four. The halfway running order was Double, Alexander, Lenart, Wright, and Bill Cunningham. At lap eight came the first of three spins by Jason Brightman, eliminating himself from the event. Wright got by Lenart for third at lap 12. Another yellow flew at lap 13 when Brightman spun again. Wright came to second with one lap to go and the final yellow appeared when the white flag was flying when Brightman and Loomis spun. When the checkers flew it was Double winning over Wright, Alexander, Nate Young and Lenart, who was a slim .003 seconds ahead of Jarrett Young, the winner July 3.

The Mini Stock feature started with caution at turn one when Kevin Watson spun. Then, after an emergency in the grandstands, racing resumed with defending-champion Lawrence leading former champion Joe Campbell, Emily Stoyer, Pat Hanlon and Pete Blazczak through the first three laps when Derrick Randolph spun with apparent help from Jacob Wheeler, who was sent to the rear for the restart. At lap four, Lawrence and Stoyer were side by side for the lead with Harvey, Campbell and Blaczak filling out the top five. Caution appeared at lap four when Jeremy Start stopped in turn four. At five laps it was Lawrence, Stoyer, last week’s winner Jessica Harvey, side by side with Campbell and Blaczak. Harvey was solidly third at halfway. Yellow again flew at lap six when Wheeler stopped on the back straight. Another caution for Bodey McClintock and Alan Sousa spun in turn two. Stoyer was the leader heading into turn three at eight laps but Lawrence was again the leader at turn two at nine laps. The final yellow was with one lap to go when Sousa lost power but stayed on the track, stopping in turn three. The final finishing order was Lawrence, Stoyer, Harvey, former champion Dillon Speer and Blaczak.
